Fire crews discovered a small fire at the rear of the vehicle

A driver from Plymouth was luckily able to escape from vehicle after it caught fire whilst being driven. The incident happened on Little Dock Lane in Honicknowle at approximately 3.14pm on Tuesday.

One crew from Crownhill attended the incident after were said to be on the scene "within minutes". On inspecting the car, crews found that a small fire had started on the rear axle.

One house reel jet was used to extinguish the blaze whilst a thermal imaging camera was used to check any hotspots. The quick actions of the Crownhill fire crew meant damage was minimal and the fire was prevented from spreading.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue: "A fire appliance from one of our Plymouth fire stations (Crownhill) was mobilised to Little Dock Lane in Plymouth following a call from the driver of a car that had caught fire whilst being driven. Our crew were on scene within mins and confirmed a small fire had developed on the rear axle of the vehicle.

"One hose reel jet was used to extinguish it, followed by a thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots. The fire was prevented from spreading any further resulting in minimal damage."

It comes after a tractor in Ugborough also caught fire. At the time, eyewitnesses described the plumes of black smoke as "volcanic".

Speaking after the incident, a spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "We were called out to attend a large tractor fire in Ugborough at 4.43pm yesterday, 20 September.

"The cause of the fire was accidental so no further investigation will take place."
